Frederic Goudy designed National Old Style Roman in 1916. It is loosely based on a logo he lettered for the National Biscuit Company in 1901. While much of Goudy’s work is strongly influenced by Venetian types of the 15th and 16th centuries - this design has a truly American quality about it. The design is useful for text or headlines that captures a sense of Americana.

Peckham comes with the standard Latinotype set of 395 glyphs resulting in a language support for 94% of the languages using the Latin alphabet. The font also includes stylistic alternates (A, R, Y, a) which provides extra versatility.

The name of the font reminds us of the city that witnessed the birth of Vincent Figgins (1766). Figgins became known as the type designer who first included slab serif fonts in a commercial catalog. Peckham pays homage to classic typefaces yet looks very contemporary.

Karlo is a super family of several branches, originating in the same lightweight skeleton. The lightweights are based on a pen of an even stroke-width.

Inspired by the writings of calligrapher Edward Johnston, the family moves on in two directions in the heavier weights. Johnston demonstrated that the broad nib pen can produce different writing styles. Following this, one heavy weight has a humanistic low stroke contrast (KarloSerifBold and KarloSansBold), and another has a high stroke contrast of vertical axis with references to the 19th century jobbing typefaces (KarloOpen). The latter is inspired by Johnston’s demonstration of the broad nib pen, where he suggested fastening two pencils together. With each pencil representing an edge of the pen, it becomes more evident how the pen works in writing.

The friendly informal look makes KarloSans and KarloSerif usable for both running text and for display sizes. KarloOpen, on the other hand, is solely designed for display purpose showing few words at a time.

In Denmark, a guy named Karlo would typically be an old fellow with a slick hairstyle that makes an effort with his appearance. He is a handyman who can do a bit of this and that when needed. He is a happy go lucky kind of guy that takes one day at a time. To me, the typeface family has some of the same qualities.

A restoration of the first Canadian-designed typeface, which was completed by Carl Dair in 1967 and named after 16th century explorer Jacques Cartier, who mapped the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the 1530s.

The design is characterized by ascenders which tower dramatically above the capitals, by condensed italic minuscules inclined at a mere 6 degrees—and by its profound empathy for the core principles of the roman type form, originating over 500 years ago.

The revival was made from a printed example of the face, in the The Magic Fiddler, and Other Legends of French Canada by Claude Aubry, published in 1968.

Dair 67 and Dair 67 Italic will create facsimiles of the original fonts’ typesetting. Dair and Dair Italic are fully-featured 21st century fonts. Dair TBNT is precisely fitted and kerned for the Tight But Not Touching style of the 1970s (notably different from both Optical kerning and tracked-in Dair).

Credit where credit is due, this typeface was inspired by the 1820 classic “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving (free read on Project Gutenberg). The typeface was meant to feel 200 years old and 2 hours old at the same time. To call it “timeless” would be cliche, and a bit conceited, but there’s a classic, old world feel to Ichabod that I’m very happy to share. It’s comfortable on faux wood, shiny beer bottles, or your laserjet paper.
