Karlo is a super family of several branches, originating in the same lightweight skeleton. The lightweights are based on a pen of an even stroke-width.

Inspired by the writings of calligrapher Edward Johnston, the family moves on in two directions in the heavier weights. Johnston demonstrated that the broad nib pen can produce different writing styles. Following this, one heavy weight has a humanistic low stroke contrast (KarloSerifBold and KarloSansBold), and another has a high stroke contrast of vertical axis with references to the 19th century jobbing typefaces (KarloOpen). The latter is inspired by Johnston’s demonstration of the broad nib pen, where he suggested fastening two pencils together. With each pencil representing an edge of the pen, it becomes more evident how the pen works in writing.

The friendly informal look makes KarloSans and KarloSerif usable for both running text and for display sizes. KarloOpen, on the other hand, is solely designed for display purpose showing few words at a time.

In Denmark, a guy named Karlo would typically be an old fellow with a slick hairstyle that makes an effort with his appearance. He is a handyman who can do a bit of this and that when needed. He is a happy go lucky kind of guy that takes one day at a time. To me, the typeface family has some of the same qualities.

Forme Furniture Type En – Low resolution type. Designed by using *Leads and ** En quads from letterpress printing. *Lead or Reglet is a piece of Lead or wooden spacing material used in letterpress typesetting, to provide spacing between paragraphs. **An En quad is a space that is one En wide half the width of an Em quad, and the same height as the typeface.

Also available as En Shadow to be used as a headline or display font.

The strange looking numerals at the bottom of bank checks are printed in magnetic ink in a font called MICR E-13B. This typeface was developed in the mid 1950s and was used by banks in 1960s all the way to the present day. This system only supports numerals and a few control codes but that didn’t stop Leo Maggs. In the mid 1960s, he created Westminster—a typeface based on the look of MICR E-13B. Soon, dozens of magnetic typefaces appeared. The magnetic typeface became associated with cutting edge technology and fashion all the way through to the late 1970s. In the 1980s, home computers appeared. They used pixel fonts and dot matrix type—the old magnetic typefaces all-of-a-sudden looked hokey. These days, designers are using magnetic typefaces in a different context. The meaning has changed from ultramodern, to old-fashioned, yet still synthetic. But in the half century since the first magnetic typefaces appeared, we’ve mainly had to old fonts to work with—1990s digitizations of older analog type. That’s why there’s Minicomputer. Minicomputer is a magnetic ink typeface with a versatile range of seven weights and italics. Language coverage includes most current Latin based languages, Vietnamese, Greek and Cyrillic. There are OpenType fractions and numeric ordinals as well as plenty of mathematical symbols. Minicomputer has an OpenType old-style numerals feature which brings up the original MICR E-13B numerals. You can even type some of the old control codes if you use fleuron characters.

Ultraproxi is an austere, technical sans-serif typeface. Visual cues were taken from high speed computer printers from the 1950s to 1970s. You’ve probably seen this type of printing on old driver’s licenses or magazine subscription labels. One of the more well known, early line printers was the IBM 1403 chain printer. Metal type slugs were linked in a chain which rapidly whirled over an ink ribbon. On the back of the page, a succession of electromagnetic hammers smacked the paper when the appropriate character lined up. The hammers struck quickly but that fast-moving chain of slugs caused some horizontal smearing. Those machines were lightning fast; later models could print over 1000 lines per minute. This printing system required a sturdy typeface design which was with the catalyst for Ultraproxi.

Ultraproxi is based on a semi-monospace concept. It has some of the characteristics of monospaced type without actually being monospaced. Your readers will perceive it as having a technical demeanor but you won’t have to deal with the downsides of working with real monospaced type: uneven spacing and fewer words to the line. Ultraproxi includes 6 weights and italics. Almost all current Latin based languages are supported, including Cyrillic languages and Greek.
